Choosing the Right Chicken (to eat of course!)

I started living a Paleo / Primal life two months ago.  What that means is that I am not eating a diet similar to Paleolithic man – meat, fruits, veggies, berries, nuts, etc.  The single biggest change is no grains – no bread, pasta, pizza, nacho chips…. oh, the list can go on.

But I feel better than I have in years.

In fact, I feel great.

A big part of eating paleo is choosing the right food to put in your body.  I found a great article about choosing the right chicken to eat.  You should really check it out.

There’s more to poultry than chicken of course (more on that another time), but make no mistake: chickens these days aren’t created equal. Breeding, feeding and other poultry farming standards result in animals that scarcely resemble each other, let alone taste the same. To the Primal point, however: when it comes to judging a chicken’s nutritional profile, a little info can go a long way. Today’s item of business: choosing the best Primal chicken for the money.

The Kingsland Farmers Market is up and running.  After 13 months of background work, it was an amazing feeling to cut the ribbon with Alderman Brian Pincott and have the market open.

Now the real work begins!

It is a rainy day today.  Haven’t been to many of these the last few years.

I have been busy getting office stuff done and almost feel caught up.  This is just an illusion though.  I am still really behind.  I guess I shouldn’t be doing this blog post , but I am behind on my blog posts.

Please visit www.kingslandfarmersmarket.com to take a look at our week 2 video.

Oh heck, here it is for you to look at.

Day 14: What a Month!

Things have been crazy.

I am not one to complain because I actually like to be busy.  It is very exciting.

I believe it was Mario Andretti who said “If you are not on the verge of being out of control, you are not going fast enough.”  I think I am going fast enough right now.

Hopefully we can get our seeding done in the next 24 hours.  The Kingsland Farmers Market is going ahead and is moving forward.  The process is SLOWER than I would like and ever imagined.  But still, everything is looking very good for the market.  Over 52 vendors coming to the outside market, and lots of interest from customers who want to be there.

I can’t wait until it opens. It looks like the opening day is now July 7.  Two weeks…..

Time to get back to work!

I don’t know what is more shocking…..

That I actually learned to type on a TYPEWRITER or the mullet I was sporting back in the ’80′s.

Maybe it is the thick full head of hair.  Oh, that was so long ago..

Bright yellow clothing, acid wash jeans, Def Leppard……

The ’80′s were awesome.

OMG!!!!! IS THAT LIQUID PAPER??????

Calgary’s Market (circa 1912)

I found this great picture at calgarymemories.com, a website that Clarence Patton has put up with his memories of his childhood growing up in the Kingsland area before any development took place.  He has some great pictures of old Calgary at his site.

I like this picture the best.

Public Market

The photo show Patton’s vegetable stall at the Calgary Public Market – circa 1915. Left to right – Ralph, Thomas and Clarence Patton.  This market was located close to the old City Hall.

Very cool.

I wonder why the first market disappeared.  Once grocery stores started popping up in the city, did people just stop attending the market?  What happened and where did it go?
