Let me rant for one minute…
The headline reads “RED MEAT IS BLAMED FOR ONE IN TEN EARLY DEATHS”
OMG! Ban red meat! Ban beef production! Beef farmers are murdering the world!
What bunch of crap.
Here is what the article says…
Scientists added that people who eat a diet high in red meat were also likely to be generally unhealthier because they were more likely to smoke, be overweight and not exercise.
So in other words, eating beef causes you to smoke and not exercise!
The reason these people die earlier is that the beef these people eat is probably burgers bought from the local fast food place with a 400 oz pop and 2 lbs of greasy fries cooked in pure genetically modified corn oil!
To blame the beef in their diet is like blaming the gas in the car for someone speeding.
Lifestyle is the big issue.
Get off yer butt and exercise!

This one is just sad. The relative risk was kind of small and the absolute risk would hardly be significant. Not to mention they didn’t control for cooking techniques. I do think that there is some evidence that really harsh cooking techniques can be harmful because they form toxins (although if the meat is marinaded it isn’t really) but they didn’t even talk about that issue, because it wasn’t even in the study.
In Australia (where much of the meat is grass-fed and without hormones by the way) no red meat was associated with instance of colon cancer, the supposed big way red meat gets you. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21364608 But interestingly enough, if the meat was baked it was strongly protective. The people who ate the most baked meat had the least risk.
And I’m not saying that it’s necessarily that the meat was protective, as we thinking people know there are a lot of confounding factors that are poorly controlled for, but the media never picks up on these kinds of studies, demonstrating their bias. Controlled trials fail to show any sort of harmful effects from red meat in the context of a healthy diet if everything is controlled for and those who don’t eat it generally have lower levels of beneficial molecules in their bodies like carnosine, carnitine, CLA, creatine, and all manners of things that start with the letter C.
But again I have never seen the media even touch on any of these issues. It’s amazing. Thank God that people are starting to become smart about this sort of thing and reading guys like Mark Sisson. Many of the comments on these sorts of posts are asking the right questions, when it wasn’t always like that.
By the way thanks you your super nutritious beef I’m at the top of my game.
Cheers.
