Day 99

A good day today.

Lots of visits to the ilovealbertafarmers.com website since Sunday. The exciting part is how the idea is spreading. The vast majority of visits are from Calgary, then other parts of Alberta. We even had a few visitors from Europe.

Quite a few vendor registrations through the website.  The neat thing is most of the registrations are people who I did not know even existed.  By that I mean, they  are looking at the Kingsland Farmers Market as a way of expanding their business’ and farms.  And so far, they all would fit within the make it, bake it, or grow it mantra.

This is also without spending $1 on promotion.  This is spread through the radio, the web, twitter, facebook and word of mouth.  People like the idea of what we are trying to do.

Gert and I gave a tour of the building to a reporter today.  I think he liked what he saw.

12:19 AM and still 28 emails in the inbox to reply to and two documents to review.

Good night!

I cant believe I forgot.  Upgrade my Blackberry Curve to an iPhone as my 2yr old blackberry curve spent half of it’s time with the hourglass spinning.

I love the video camera feature.  I love the great photos.

I need to set it up so I can post to this blog from anywhere anytime.

Like I said, good day today.  Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

The song of the day is “Living on the Edge” by White Lion.  Yes, I am still living in the 80’s. Vito Bratta plays a tasty little guitar.

“I’m going to do it my way and I won’t change for no one.

I’m living on the edge and I got nothing to lose.”

LOCAL 101 and LOCAL 201 Tickets on Sale

Everything has come together for this year’s version of LOCAL 101! For those of you who did not get to LOCAL 101 last year, you aren’t going to want to miss this year. LOCAL 101 is an afternoon of presentations by farmers and cooks about local food and agriculture. This year we have Sheila Hamilton of Sunworks Farm, Tim Hoven of Hoven Farm, Elna Edgar of Edgar Farm, writer, cook and poet dee Hobsbawn-Smith, Kris Vester of Blue Mountain Biodynamic Farm, and Wade Sirois of Forage andInfuse Catering. A sampling of local foods and cash bar with local beers, fruit wines, and mead will follow the talks. This event is for everyone and it is a great way to start connecting with people in our local food system.

LOCAL 201 is new for this year and we have created it to connect the broader local food movement. If you are looking to find out more about what is going on and the people who are making it happen you’ll want to come to 201. We are going to have about two dozen people give short overviews of what they are doing and then follow that with a panel discussion. After that there will be a chance to network over lunch by Forage.

LOCAL 101 and LOCAL 201 are being held at River Park Church (3818 – 14A Street SW) are being sponsored by Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Slow Food Calgary, and Forage with support from SAIT Tourism and Hospitality Management and Calgary Food Policy Council.

Tickets must be purchased in advance and the space for LOCAL 201 is limited. The cost for LOCAL 101 is $20 and LOCAL 201 is $40 and both include GST. Call Forage if you want to buy tickets and pick them up at the event or drop by Forage to buy them.

Genetically Modified Pigs are NOT harmful to the Environment

Genetically engineered pigs are one step closer to becoming meat on Canadian kitchen tables with the federal government poised to declare that they do not harm the environment.

This is the first regulatory hurdle to get the pigs to market, which will be a first in the country if Health Canada approves Guelph’s pending application, submitted last year, seeking a government declaration that its transgenic pig is fit for human consumption.

In related reports, DDT is not harmful to the environment and CFC’s are going to save the world.

Jamie Oliver’s TED Talk: A MUST WATCH talk

February 12, 2010 by Tim · Leave a Comment

I am absolutely stunned by Jamie Oliver’s TED Talk about obesity.

Jamie Oliver’s Wish

“I wish for your help to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity.”
Every so often you are able to hear somebody say something that you have had thoughts about  but lacked the words to put it together.  That is what I felt when I heard this talk.
I love a talk that inspires.
I love a talk that causes action.
I am excited to see how much of what Jamie spoke about shows up at the upcoming Local 101 and Local 201 events on March 13.
Take the time.  Watch the video.

I have Been Busy

First of all, being busy is no excuse.  In fact, I love being busy.  Busy is a good thing.

But the reason there have been no updates in the last few weeks is just a matter of priorities.

Between running the farm, the market, meetings, the LocalLunch.tv, a few more meetings, my wife in Scotland, having the Farmers Market yank my membership, I haven’t had a lot of time to blog.

I am working on a post about the Local 2020 event with some pictures.

We are also working on some big plans for the Local 101 event as a speaker and doing some next stuff with the LocalLunch.

Busy is good, and busy with I love my job is even better.

10 Hottest Women in the Food Industry

February 3, 2010 by Tim · Leave a Comment

There is just something sexy about a woman who takes big, reckless, greedy bites out of life; a woman who isn’t afraid of fire, or knives, or licking her fingers. And all ten of these female chefs, food critics, bloggers, and television personalities fit these criteria. They are all leaders in their field, accomplished professionals who also happen to be fantastically attractive. Each of these women vibrates with passion, style, and authority. And we love them for it.

What would you like to see?

January 25, 2010 by Tim · 3 Comments

I have been thinking about the little videos I’ve been making about the farm.

I have some ideas of what I would like to show people about my farm, but I would really like to know what would you like to see about my farm?

The farm is a lot more active in spring, summer, and fall. There are a lot more things to see and share at those times.  In winter, the farm is a totally different place from the other three seasons.

Because I am here all the time and see everything that’s going on, I sometimes forget what nonfarm people are interested in. Please let me know because I would love to be able to show you what you are interested in.

Please read comment if there’s some aspect of agriculture, organic farming, or ranching that you would like to see you learn about.
